With over 28 years of working experience in research & development, product development, business development, knowledge and innovation management, intellectual property protection, strategic collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization, Alex has the breadth and depth of experience needed to quickly understand the issues and challenges in knowledge-creating organizations and high technology businesses, and create the most suitable solutions.
Alex’s two professional careers include 18 years of R&D experience in both academic and industry settings specializing in medical biophysics, molecular biology, bioreactor development, renewable energy and bioassay development. He also served 10 years in education institutions, managing innovation and entrepreneurship development, intellectual property protection, collaboration research agreements, licensing and technology commercialization. He has worked in Canada, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
Before founding K-STRATEGIAN.COM in October 2010, Alex managed large patent portfolios of diverse technologies, and negotiated numerous research collaboration agreements and licenses as the Director of Innovation & Technology Transfer office at Nanyang Technology University (NTU) in Singapore. He also spent 5 years as the Director of Research and Business Development at a Canadian start-up biotechnology company. Alex’s wide-ranging management and operational skills include IP protection strategy, technology valuation, technology license negotiation, competitive intelligence, technology and business case development, and managing high technology companies.
Alex is a former President of Licensing Executive Society (LES), Singapore chapter. He actively participates in LES, the international association for licensing professionals, and has served as an executive-committee member holding various posts for LES (Singapore) in the past 8 years. He is a qualified licensing trainer by LES. Together with his colleagues at LES (Singapore), Alex has developed and taught a 2-day Basic Licensing Course for the past 5 years in Singapore.
Alex has served for the past 5 years as an expert speaker for World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in their programs on assisting developing countries in the development of national strategies and policies for innovation, technology transfer, and IP management. He is a frequent invited speaker on the topics of IP management, technology transfer, technology valuation and technology licensing in international conferences and seminars. He has also given lectures in IP management, technology transfer and licensing at NTU.
Alex was a board director on five NTU’s subsidiary companies and is a trustee of Cogswell Polytechnical College in Sunnyvale, USA. For his work in innovation management, he was presented with the Excellence in Innovation Award by the INDIRA College of Engineering & Management in 2010.
Dr. Yu was educated in Canada with a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from McMaster University, and a Ph.D. degree in Medical Biophysics from the Ontario Cancer Institute, University of Toronto. He also has certificates in Competitive Intelligence and Canadian Securities.
